Cool and Strange Music
edited by Dana Countryman

1996 saw quite the proliferation of "lounge" 'zines. Most burnt out quickly or began publishing more and more infrequently. Others simply shifted to rockabilly or surf or whatever. One, however, has not only survived and stuck to its original vision, but gotten better and better with each passing issue. Cool and Strange started as a gleam in the eye of obsessive collector Dana Countryman, but has expanded to serve as the source for learning about music you "just can't get anywhere, kids!"

A list of featured articles reads like a who's who of thrift music...Martin Denny, Stan Freberg, Tiny Tim, Herb Alpert, Little Marcy, Andre Popp, the Shaggs, Raymond Scott, JJ Perrey, and dozens more have graced the covers and pages of the 8 issues so far. Add to this record reviews, a cover art gallery, a regular feature on record shopping in various cities and a rotating cast of contributing writers and you have an extremely fascinating AND informative read!

The last two issues have been exceptionally strong as issue #7 featured an exclusive Martin Denny interview and a feature on the oh so fabulous Shaggs. The latest issue (#8) has features on Stan Freberg, the art of liner notes, music from outer space and an incredible interview with Tiny Tim.

If you had to choose only one magazine to buy for your musical and collecting education, Cool and Strange is undoubtably the one you want!

Subscriptions are just $12 a year (4 issues) for cool guys and gals in the U.S.A., $16 in Canada and $25 for our foreign buddies (U.S. funds only)! Single copies of NEW Issues are only $3.95 in the USA and Canada, $5 for overseas. Cool And Strange Music!
